Who are we?

We are a multicultural English speaking Christian congregation who meet together every Sabbath (Saturday) morning. We are family and community focused. Our members attend from across the Wellington region, but most are based in the Hutt Valley and Wainuiomata.

Our aim is to be caring and welcoming to anyone who steps through our doors, just as Jesus cared for and welcomed all who came to Him.

Our church is growing, with a large number of families, children and youth, along with activities for them. We have a men’s group and a women’s ministry, pilates for the young at heart, aphasia support group, english classes for chinese speakers and much more. See our groups page to find out how to become part of a group.

Where do we come from?

The first Seventh-day Adventist Church built in the Hutt Valley was in Bracken St, Petone in the 1930s and is now occupied by the Hutt Valley Christadelphians. A larger church was built on land that used to be Wheatley Nursery in Epuni over a period of 18 months and completed in ’61. Gordon Philips worked on the construction full time, along with an army of volunteers on Sundays and various contractors. Since then there have been minor renovations. This is the building in use today.

For most of the time, the congregation has been primarily NZ European. As more Pacific Islanders immigrated to New Zealand, Pakeha became the minority here at Lower Hutt SDA Church. In 1988 the Hutt Valley Samoan Seventh-day Adventist church was built is in Cooper St, Taita for the large proportion of Samoans in the congregation. Since then, the congregation has become more diverse with a representation of Filipinos, Pacific Islanders, NZ Europeans, Indians, Zimbabweans, Spanish, Chinese and more.

Where are we going?

Our Goals

To disciple new believers to build a strong relationship with Jesus.

To ensure that believers of all ages have the opportunity to develop their spiritual gifts within a safe and supportive church environment.

To undertake community outreach that focuses on responding to the physical and spiritual needs of the community surrounding Lower Hutt church.

What do we believe?

As a Christian church, we are a faith community grounded in the teachings of the Holy Bible. We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and is our Guide for living a fulfilling lifestyle. Our 28 fundamental beliefs are organized into six categories:

GOD: We believe that God Loves

God is love, power, and splendor—and God is a mystery. His ways are far beyond us, but He still reaches out to us. God is infinite yet intimate, three yet one, all-knowing yet all-forgiving.

HUMANITY: We believe that God creates

From neurons to nebulae, DNA to distant galaxies, we are surrounded by wonder. Yet the beauty is broken.

SALVATION: We believe that God Redeems

Love. Harmony. Perfection. Once, all creation sang the same glorious song.

CHURCH: We believe that God Inhabits

Jesus left His followers with an epic mission: tell the world of His love and His promise to return. Also, they should love people the way He loved them.

LIVING: We believe that God transforms

God’s law in the Ten Commandments show us how to live and make clear our need for Jesus. Though the law shows us the path to follow and convicts us of sin, it’s about far more than just toeing the line.

RESTORATION: We believe that God Triumphs

From the Garden of Eden to the Tower of Babel, the destruction of Sodom to the Exodus from Egypt, God has always investigated before taking action.
